Alex Kerstan

Voicing and Concert Prep

Learn how Alex creates a “best sound”—touch and tone tailored to each unique pianist.

What's in the episode ?

Alex would like to dispel a prejudice, as some piano technicians immediately think of needling the hammer felt when they hear the word "voicing". You will quickly find that this is only the last of sixteen steps; and that needling is often not even necessary. Alex will help us imagine the piano note from the touch of the fingertip on the key to the arrival of the sound in our ears. This chain of energy transport should run optimally, as in a relay race in sports.

"Despite having been involved in the industry from age 12 (we purchased a music store when I was 12) & having been a Tuner/Technician for 50+ years I learned from every presenter. Not everything was new territory but I feel like I have a fresh outlook on my decades old profession!"

"I found the 'extra' info toward the end of Alex's presentation regarding of of Steingraeber's current innovations (Sordino felt, 'Mozart Rail,' etc.,) very fascinating."
